General History
My name is Gavin Clayton, aka Interkarma. I’m a technology professional with over 25 years experience working in the IT industry. For 20 years, I ran my own business providing the local SME market with a range of business-critical solutions. I supplied and maintained servers, software licensing, cloud solutions, designed networks, and managed security for clients across a wide range of verticals. Prior to starting my own business, I worked at a larger solutions provider servicing enterprise and local government.
I’m also a lifetime software developer. I started programming on the Commodore family of computers in the early 80s using BASIC and 6502 assembly. I eventually moved on to IBM compatible PCs where I learned C++, C#, HTML, ASP.NET, and related stacks. By this time, I had started working in the IT industry where my general aptitude for software helped me solve difficult problems and become a valued team member.
Creating Games
I’ve always been deeply interested in creating games. Even as life steered me in other directions, I remained passionate about game creation. I continued to learn and dissect other games, doing what I could in my spare time to understand how games are designed and creating small games of my own. Developing video games became my creative outlet as they have unlimited potential to build new worlds and explore them first-hand.
I’m also voracious reader with a love of science fiction and fantasy. Prior to creating video games, my earliest efforts include writing a “fighting fantasy” styled adventure and creating D&D campaign settings I ran with friends.
With powerful game engines like Unity and Unreal, game development has become more accessible than ever. I finally had the opportunity to make something substantial and scale my knowledge to create a large, complex game. In 2015, this culminated in the Daggerfall Unity project, which I built over several years in my personal time with the help of an amazing community.
The Future
In 2023, I left the IT industry to have more precious time with family and refocus on new challenges.
With more experience behind me, I’ve started work on an original video game title. The goal is to explore my own sensibilities in game design while creating fun experiences for others to enjoy.
